Team Sauber-Mercedes Revival 2026: Reuniting with a Le Mans Legend
Motorsport History Comes Alive in Romanshorn
On July 3, 2026, the autobau erlebniswelt in Romanshorn on Lake Constance became a very special meeting place for friends and former companions from one of motorsport’s great eras.
The Team Sauber-Mercedes Revival brought together the people, memories and racing cars that helped shape international sports car racing.
For Rennarzt.de, the event was much more than a traditional reunion. Many of the names and cars are closely connected to a period when the Rennarzt himself was part of this remarkable motorsport environment.
At the centre of attention was one of the most fascinating cars in Sauber-Mercedes history: the legendary Sauber-Mercedes C9.
Number 63: A Car That Made History
Particular attention was given to the C9 carrying the legendary number 63 – a number forever associated with one of the greatest achievements in the history of Sauber and Mercedes-Benz.
At the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans, Jochen Mass, Manuel Reuter and Stanley Dickens drove the Sauber-Mercedes C9 #63 to overall victory.
It was a triumph that still holds a special place in motorsport history today.
The C9 was one of the most spectacular Group C racing cars of its era. Its development was shaped significantly by Leo Ress from Großmaischeid, who played a decisive technical role in Sauber’s sports car programme for many years.
At the revival in Romanshorn, this history came back to life – not simply behind barriers or in historic photographs, but as something that could once again be seen, heard and experienced.
Stanley Dickens Back Behind the Wheel
One of the most emotional moments of the event was Stanley Dickens returning to the cockpit of a Sauber-Mercedes C9.
The driver who had made history at Le Mans in 1989 alongside Jochen Mass and Manuel Reuter was able to drive the legendary Group C machine once again during the revival.
Moments such as these are what make historic motorsport gatherings so special. Suddenly, the focus is no longer simply on statistics, race results or archive photographs.
The people and the machines meet again – decades after their greatest shared achievements.
Kenny Acheson, another driver closely associated with the successful Sauber-Mercedes era, was also part of the gathering and can be seen in our photo series from the revival.
The Rennarzt at Le Mans: Medical Support During a Remarkable Era
For Rennarzt.de, the connection to Le Mans has a very personal significance.
Dr. Med. Karl R. Schuster accompanied the Mercedes-Benz racing environment at the time as a race doctor, supporting drivers and team members during an era in which the Sauber-Mercedes prototypes competed for victories on some of the world’s greatest circuits.
A 24-hour race such as Le Mans places extraordinary demands on a driver.
Speed alone is never enough. Concentration, physical resilience and reaction time must be maintained at the highest level for many hours.
Cockpit heat, lack of sleep, dehydration, high cornering and braking forces and the mental pressure of endurance racing all make medical support an important part of the wider team effort.
Then as now, one principle remains the same: behind successful racing drivers is always a team working to ensure that both driver and machine arrive at the start as well prepared as possible.
An Era That Still Connects People Today
The revival in Romanshorn demonstrated just how strong the bond within the former Sauber-Mercedes team remains.
Drivers, technicians, team members and companions came together again, united by memories of an era that became an important chapter in the motorsport history of both Sauber and Mercedes-Benz.
For Rennarzt.de, gatherings such as this are particularly meaningful.
They remind us that motorsport history is not simply made up of racing cars, trophies and result sheets.
Above all, it is made up of people.
Of trust, teamwork, shared challenges and moments that continue to tell stories decades later.
Thank You to Peter Sauber and Lukas
A special thank you goes to Peter Sauber, whose name and work are inseparably connected with this extraordinary chapter of motorsport history.
We would also like to thank Lukas Baumgartner for his commitment and for helping make this special gathering and the Team Sauber-Mercedes Revival possible.
The revival in Romanshorn was a day filled with memories, emotion and motorsport history – and for Rennarzt.de, a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with familiar faces and revisit shared chapters from the past.
Our photo galleries and videos offer a glimpse of this special day.
Because some stories do not end when the chequered flag falls.
